Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi announced the new feeder zone regulations for schools in the Gauteng province, which were recently approved by the government.

Mufti Moosajee spoke to Department of Education Spokesperson, Steve Mabona, to unpack the new school admission regulations and the impact of these on parents and students.

Lesufi says that the department is changing the look and feel of schools in the province to ensure that the culture of non-racialism remains embedded within schools and parents have proper choices without unnecessary restrictions.

The new regulations will allow for fair and transparent access to schools for parents and pupils. Pupils from any background are allowed to apply to any school despite their financial status and residential address or parent’s work address.

A welcome change for many parents is that the feeder zone will allow parents to apply for school admissions within a 30km radius of their homes. A further change will include that the Head of the Department will now have the power to administer admissions and all forms of unfair discrimination.

The Gauteng Department of Education will publish the amendments on its’ website, and the regulations will be effective from the date of publication.
