The Virtues of the 10 days of Thul Hijjah and Eid-ul-Adha

September 28, 2007

Fasting during the 10 Days of Thul-Hijjah

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast on the first nine days of Thu’l-Hijjah. It was narrated from Hunaydah ibn Khaalid from his wife, that one of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast on the first nine days of Thu’l-Hijjah and the day of ‘Ashoora’, and three days each month, the first Monday of the month and two Thursdays. Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, 4/205 and by Abu Dawood.

Note: Regarding the fasting on the 10 of Thul-Hijjah, the day when it is Haraam to fast it was the noble practice of Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) not to eat anything from the time he awoke before dawn he sacrificed his Qurbaani and then partook of its meat. If we practice on this Sunnah we will receive the reward of fasting on the tenth.

Virtue of Thul-Hijjah

Ibn ‘Abbaas (RA) (may Allaah be pleased with him and his father) also reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There is no deed more precious in the sight of Allaah, nor greater in reward, than a good deed done during the ten days of Sacrifice.” He was asked, “Not even jihaad for the sake of Allaah?” He said, “Not even jihaad for the sake of Allaah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing.” (Reported by al-Daarimi, 1/357; its isnaad is hasan as stated in al-Irwaa’, 3/398).

Thikr in Thul-Hijjah

Ibn Abbas (RA) reports from Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam):

There are no greater days of Ibadah and actions besides the (first) ten days of Thul-Hijjah according to Allah Ta’ala. Therefore engage yourself during these days with remembering the greatness of Allah with Tasbeeh, Tahleel, Tahmeed and Takbeer. (Reported by Ahmad, 7/224)

  • Tasbeeh is Subhanallah
  • Taleel is La Laa’ilaa Illallah
  • Tahmeed is Alhamdulillah
  • Takbeer is Allahu Akbar

These Tasbeehs are contained in the third Kalima. Recite this Kalima abundantly during the ten days of Thul Hijjah.

Staying Awake during the nights of Thul-Hijjah

Whoever stays awake on 5 nights, Jannah will become Waajib on him; i.e. the 8th of Thul-Hijjah the 9th of Thul-Hijjah, the 10th of Thul-Hijjah, night of Eidul-Fitr and the 15th of Shabaan.

Takbeer-Tashreek – ALLAHU AKBAR ALLAHU AKBAR LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAHU WALLAHU AKBAR ALLAHU AKBAR WALILLAHIL HAMD

Takbeer-Tashreeq is Waajib from the Fajr of the 9th of Thul-Hijjah to the Asr of the 13th. for 5 days totaling 23 Salaahs.

Recite the Takbeer-Tashreeq (Males aloud while the women recite it softly)

Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said: “0 Fatima! Go and present your Qurbani, because the first drop of blood that falls from it causes all your sins to be forgiven. This animal on the Day of Qiyaamah with its blood and flesh will be placed on your scale increasing it seventy times more.”

Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) slaughtered 100 camels, 63 with his Mubarak hands for his Ummah.

O Allah, we ask You, an Allah-fearing and righteous life and an easy and comfortable death, and a return onto You that is not derogatory nor disgraceful. O Allah, do not destroy us unexpectedly, and do not take us by surprise and not not make us unmindful of the rights and bequests of others.

O Allah we beg of You Your modesty, independence in need from others, piety, guidance and a pleasing end in the Hereafter and in this world. And we seek Your protection from having doubt (in faith and religion), from disunion and from seeking fame and praise (for deeds) in your religion.

O Controller of hearts, do not cause our hearts to deviate after You have guided us and grant us mercy from Yourself, for surely Your are the Giver.

Ameen
