Implications of New Land Bill

June 06, 2016

2016-06-06

Parliament has approved a Bill that would allow government to make compulsory purchases of land. This is part of the plans to speed up land reform and redress racial disparities. Land remains predominantly in white hands more than two decades after the end of apartheid. The Bill, which sets out the legislative requirements for the State to lay claim to land for public purpose or in the public interest, was passed after the ANC and some opposition parties MPs voted in favour of the Bill, which was slightly amended by the National Council of Provinces (NCOP). Mufti Yusuf Moosagie discussed the implications of the Bill with Dr Anthea Jeffery, head of policy research at the Institute for Race Relations.
