Analysis : US Killing of Ayman al-Zawahiri and the Middle East Report with James Dorsey

August 06, 2022

Yumna Moosa

James Dorsey, journalist and political analysist, has said that the US killing of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has a symbolic value at best. The killing took place earlier this week when the United States conducted a drone attack in Afghanistan’s capital of Kabul, killing the leader at his home. Dorsey continues and says that, “he (Ayman al-Zawahiri) was a has-been. Al-Qaeda has not been able to really control its various franchises or launch a major operation for almost two decades. Its been overtaken and overshadowed by the Islamic State”

In regards to the US and Iran engaging in a last resort attempt to salvage the nuclear agreement, Dorsey states, “this was unexpected and barely announced in advanced. The question is now whether or not there will be a last minute rescuing of the 2015 international agreement that curbed Iran’s nuclear program. The prospects seem very dim because the two sides could not agree on what assurances the United States could give that they would not be a repeat of the 2018 walkout from the agreement, by the former US president Donald Trump.”
