Zuma Not as Powerful as People Think- Ebrahim Fakir

February 07, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 07-02-2017

As President Jacob Zuma prepares to deliver what is believed to be his last state of the nation address (SONA) political analyst Ebrahim Fakir says he doesn’t believe Zuma is as all powerful as some people think.

Parliament says it is all systems go for SONA to be delivered by Zuma on Thursday at 7 o’ clock.

Speaking to ENCA, Fakir says while there have been rumours of a cabinet reshuffle, Zuma is constrained.

“Think about the NEC last year in which there was a potential motion of no confidence. Think about the fact that when they announced that there would be a committee which will start overseeing the state owned enterprises, not just the president and his handpicked set of people who are going to think about this, shows there is an emerging imbalance starting to shift in the ANC and the president is not always in the ANC to be able to ‘rule the roost’.”

Fakir says Zuma will try and make a legacy speech.

“Part of that legacy is the kind of thing we weve been hearing all along, the dismantling of white monopoly capital and introducing the idea of radical economic transformation.

This year’s SONA is expected to take place amidst the tightest security yet.
