President Jacob Zuma has declared the 3rd of August, the date of the 2016 municipal elections an official public holiday.
In a statement Zuma said that voting is a fundamental right enshrined in the constitution.
“It is important that citizens are granted an opportunity to exercise this right freely. This is particulary so when they elect this sphere of government that is closest to them.”
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says 26.3 million people have registered to vote in the 2016 municipal elections, making it the highest number in South Africa’s history.
