The African National Congress (ANC) Treasurer General Paul Mashatile says President Jacob Zuma has been given a deadline for today (Wednesday) to leave office or face a motion of no confidence.
Mashatile made the announcement during a media briefing after Parliament’s ANC Caucus met on Wednesday to discuss the party’s National Executive Committee’s (NEC)’s decision to recall Zuma.
This was the second caucus meeting the party has called in the last week to discuss matters related Zuma’s removal.
Mashatile says Zuma’s time is up.
“It’s over for President Jacob Zuma as the ANC in Parliament has decided to remove him through a motion of no confidence on Thursday if he doesn’t resign today.”
Mashatile says the ANC does not want to leave the people of South Africa waiting, and whether Zuma responds today or not, the party must proceed with the parliamentary processes.
“We have now asked the chief whip to proceed with the motion of no confidence tomorrow… so that President Zuma is then removed so that we can then proceed to elect President Ramaphosa.”
He says Zuma didn’t ask for amnesty or payment of his legal fees.
Mashatile says depending on logistics, mainly the Chief Justice’s availability, South Africa could have a new president as early as Thursday and the State of the Nation Address (Sona) would then take place on Monday.
