Rustenburg police say the situation in Zinniaville in the North West is calm following a day of volatile protests in the area.

Unrest spilled onto the streets of Zinniaville on Wednesday resulting in electrical boxes being destroyed and homes being damaged.

It’s alleged protests started when the local municipality swooped on illegal electricity connections in the informal settlement on the outskirts of town.

The police’s Sabata Mokgwabone says they are monitoring the situation.

“The police were called together with the Rustenburg Local Municipality Public Safety Officials. They managed to deal with the situation. So at this stage it is quiet, a case of public violence has been opened.”

Mokgwabone says No arrest have been made in connection with the protests.
