Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane says Western Cape Premier will face a disciplinary process after tweeting about colonialism.
Zille tweeted: “Getting onto an aeroplane now and won’t get onto the Wi-Fi so that I can cut off those who think EVERY aspect of colonial legacy was bad.”
Speaking on 702, Maimane distanced himself from Zille’s tweets saying they were they were unacceptable.
Maimane says Zille breached the party’s social media policy.
“It has been referred to a disciplinary process. I have come out as a South African and condemned it. The wording is indefensible.”
Zille later apologised on Twitter for the comments saying: “it may have come across as a defence of colonialism. It was not.”
At the same time The ANC in the Western has called for Zille to be recalled as Premier of the Western Cape.
Spokesperson Yonela Diko says Zille has continued to defend every racist that has captured the country’s imagination.
“Zille’s inability to “reconcile” the country’s comprehensive history has, over the years, driven her “to a mental breakdown and this breakdown has been coming slowly….”
A number of DA members have publicly criticised Zille’s comments on Twitter.

I apologise unreservedly for a tweet that may have come across as a defence of colonialism. It was not.

Let’s make this clear: Colonialism, like Apartheid, was a system of oppression and subjugation. It can never be justified.
