Quenching the thirst of million of hujjaj across the globe, the Zamzam well in Makkah, Saudi Arabia is considered the world’s oldest well that has not dried up.

Located about 20 meters from the Ka’ba, the 5,000-year-old well dates back to the time of Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh).

Allah ordered Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) to leave his wife Hajar and her son Ismail in an ‘uncultivated valley now know as Makkah.

After Ismail’s food and water ran out, Hajar started running back and forth from Safa to Marwah searching for water, at which point Jibreel (pbuh) pumped the water from under the child’s feet allowing her to drink from the well and also feed her son.

Saudi Gazette reports the Zamzam well has pushed the boundary in continuing to stream until this day, even though studies have shown that wells only last for 70 years with streaming water.

The well is 30 meters deep and pumps water with a maximum rate of 18.5 liters per second, and a minimum of 11 liters per second.

Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) said: “May Allah bestow mercy on Ismail’s mother! Had she left the Zamzam flow without trying to control it, Zamzam would have been a stream flowing on the surface of the earth.”
