Women fear motor-vehicle mechanics, and this is why

Ladies spoke out about feeling unsettled when visiting a mechanic in a recent parent group. As females, we balance the life of a home, children and the daily errands, but visiting a store for any car related issues can be daunting to us the most.

There is no certainty in knowing if a mechanic is overcharging for essential services, but there is a checklist to ensure you aren’t taken for a ride.

Firstly, ask friends, family and the community for personal references of people they have used in your area for essential services and other issues your car might have. Once you have a list, you can call the place of service to ask if they are registered with any automobile association, giving you peace of mind.

Secondly, ask for a detailed quote in writing to know what you are getting; speak to the technician about what is bothering you in the car. After all, you know your vehicle better than anyone else.

Lastly, ask if the parts you are getting are original or generic and find out about the guarantee offered after a service.  It is important to know what is included and excluded and if the oil filter is being changed when getting a service. Always ask to see your old one as you need it.  I have learned that many well-established stores take shortcuts and don’t always replace the filter as promised, which could lead to more significant issues.

To save yourself time and frustration, get everything in writing – what is being quoted, what is being replaced, and the parts used. I always ask to see the old parts taken from my car to ensure what was promised is delivered.
