A 21-year-old Wits University student who was detained in Israel has returned back South Africa.
Laeeqah Sujee was detained by Israeli authorities on her way to Palestine after the Palestinian Higher Council for Youth and Sport invited her and two other South African delegates for an arts and culture camp.
Sujee left South Africa on Friday and arrived at the Ben Gurion International Airport in Israel at 4am on Saturday morning.
According to the Media Review Network (MRN) Sujee who wears the Hijab or Islamic headscarf, was called aside for questioning and interrogated for a period of five hours.
Sujee told iTV Networks the interrogation was brutal and that Israeli authorities constantly accused her of lying about why she was in the country.
“The last interrogator was the worst, he started screaming at me. The last thing he said was ‘you are part of BDS, you are lying I can’t let you work for an organization that wants to kill my country.’”
Attorney for the victims Ziyad Patel, says the arbitrary detention and deportation bears a reflection of the Israeli apartheid regimes misplaced suspicion and paranoia whilst it continues daily to violate the fundamental human rights of others especially Palestinians.
