Why you need to shop with a calculator

Over the past week, there have been numerous posts popping up on Facebook about people who have overcharged at retail stores. Generally, I would bypass this sort of posting, but in the last few weeks, I have been fleeced a total of R137 due to the products scanned, but charged at a different price than what the store labels promise.

In most cases, the new pricing is not updated on the system, and if you are buying numerous items, it is easy to lose track of how much you should have spent.

My suggestion is that you use a calculator. It may be a mission, but it will help to ensure that you are not overcharged.

Now, most times, stores will argue that they made a mistake if an item you buy scans for a higher price. But, according to the Consumer Protection Act, you are only liable for the price advertised. Usually, the item will scan for a higher price, but if you can show that there is a discrepancy with the price, you are entitled to ask to pay the lower price. And, if you have paid already; you may ask for a refund. Always check your receipts before leaving the store.

According to the Consumer Goods and Service Ombudsman, a supplier must not require a consumer to pay for any goods or service higher than the displayed price for those goods or services.

Many stores have an eagle eye policy that rewards shopper’s for spotting mistakes, my suggestion to you is that you contact the store via email and find out.
