There has been an outcry by optometrists, as untested and tested contact lenses can now be bought online and even by some home industries.

Optometrists have taken to social media to comment on such adverts warning people that this may lead to eye health deterioration and other eye complications and that any contact lenses be tested or untested, should be ordered via an optometrist and not back door channels.

Optometrist and a Contact Lens Practitioner, owner of eight optometrists branches throughout Durban, have been in practice for 17 years. Tasneem Khan speaks to Radio Islam International about eye care and health issues.

According to Khan, concerns regarding the purchase of contact lenses online and over the counter is that contact lenses are regulated medical devices and need to be treated that way.

“An eye test needs to be done especially for first time contact lens users, in order to ensure the knowledge on how to use, insert and take care of them is taught as it is vital,” she says.

The law has prohibited the private and over-the-counter sale of contact lenses. It is also prohibited for a patient to wear contact lenses before being tested in the last two years or without a valid prescription.

According to Khan, companies may be having an issue with cramping down the sale of contact lenses as it’s become so rampant, which can be purchased from a beautician.

Contact lenses for cosmetic purposes may be of more concern as Khan suggests there is more danger if not purchasing them from your optometrist.

“The eyes are a sensitive region and need materials that are going to promote the health of the eyes. The type of material determines how much oxygen and nutrients get into the eye. Not using the right products can cause serious eye infections that could lead to blindness,” she says.
