WhatsApp has officially introduced video calling to its messaging app which is likely to strike fear into the hearts of its competitors.
The messaging service, responding to popular demand rolled out the long-awaited feature yesterday to its billion-plus users across the main mobile software platforms, including Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android and Microsoft’s Windows.
WhatsApp was one of the last major messaging services to offer voice calling, and is now catching up with Tencent’s WeChat and Snap as well as Google and Apple.
The latest feature could be bad news for rivals such as Skype and Apple’s Facetime, as WhatApp ups the ante in its effort to position itself as a one-stop-shop for communications.
WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum says video calls was rolled out to 180 countries within hours after the feature was introduced at an event in India.
“We obviously try to be in tune with what our users want. We’re obsessed with making sure that voice and video work well even on low-end phones.”
Video calling is one of several new additions to WhatsApp’s feature suite in recent weeks.
In October, the company rolled-out a feature that allowed users to draw on images, similar to functionalities found on Snapchat, Instagram and iMessage.
