As we deal with constant power outages, we expose our homes and businesses to numerous risks, which include damage to electronic equipment and compromised security systems. It is necessary to explore proactive measures that help mitigate the risks and prepare you for any eventuality and inconvenience associated with scheduled and unplanned electricity outages.

Here are tips to help you home against potential load shedding risks without the need of a generator or solar panels.

  • Stay on top of things, and use load-shedding apps to keep track of scheduled outages in your area so that you are well-prepared.
  • Ensure you have sufficient backup lighting by keeping a torch or headlamp in your car if you arrive home at night during a power outage.
  • Ensure that cell phones, laptops, and tablet devices are fully charged ahead of scheduled blackouts.  Remember to charge them again as soon as possible after the power returns.
  • Get backup batteries for your alarm and gate system to use when load shedding occurs, so your home is not vulnerable to intruders.
  • Keep emergency phone chargers and power banks nearby, and these come in handy during extended power outages.
  • Take advantage of gas; investing in a small gas bottle or lamp can benefit cooking and lighting. It may also be a good idea to prepare meals beforehand if you know there will be a scheduled blackout during mealtimes.
  • Leave your freezer and refrigerator doors closed as much as possible to preserve the temperatures inside.
  • Unplug your cables as soon as the power goes out. This will help prevent damage or injury due to surges that may occur when electricity is restored.
  • Save emergency contact information on your phone and keep a printed copy close by. This should include emergency services such as the fire department, police and medical services.
