Faaizah Laher, a dietician at The Garden City Hospital, spoke to Radio Islam International about what foods and drinks to enjoy at suhoor and which should be avoided.
Suhoor is a beautiful sunnah of our Prophet Nabi Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him).
The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Eat suhoor, for in suhoor there is blessing.” al-Bukhaari (1923). Therefore, a purified suhoor is beneficial.
Faaizah Laher recommends apple juice as an excellent drink for suhoor as it provides significant benefits, including keeping good energy levels.
For iftaar, we need foods that provide the energy we need and are fulfilling.
Laher recommends meals with great energy sources, including proteins, fibre and slow-digesting carbohydrates. She provided a comprehensive list of wholesome and sunnah foods, including:
- Oats & honey with milk or cottage cheese is high in protein.
Use leftover meals from the previous iftaar:
- Curry and vegetables
Protein-filled meals:
- Eggs
- Fish
- Chicken
Providing children with wholesome meals during Ramadan is a considerable challenge for mothers. Laher provided some tips for making their meals flavourful. She added that eating anything should be suitable as long as they eat and gave the following as examples:
- A smoothie blend of oats, yoghurt, and honey
- Scrambled eggs
- Bananas provide energy and keep one satiated
- Toast with peanut butter
