What impact does what happens at the ANC’s elective conference in December have on the rest of the country?

The ANC on Friday issued new rules for the election of National Executive Committee members, including race, age, and gender composition of its top leadership.

This comes amid the article published on the weekend by the times live that Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma confirms she will challenge president Ramaphosa for the second time.

Political analyst professor Prof Vasti Roodt and Dr Ntsikelelo Breakfast gave insight on the matter with Radio Islam International.

Vasti Roodt said the announcement was not entirely unexpected as the RET faction does not have a candidate; because of the election rules, many people who may have wanted to run for the Presidency have been excluded from doing so.

Therefore, Dlamini Zuma seems like a candidate that has been put forward to advance the interest, whether she has the necessary popularity to gain against Cyril Ramaphosa.

However, Roodt said she knows that the prediction game is very uncertain Roodt said the new rules are a game changer considering that those vying for the top 6 positions have to make a detailed financial record available and the fact that anyone charged or who has been charged and appealing is not eligible for the position.

Breakfast described Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma’s announcement as a political initiative of former President Jacob Zuma, considering that he is the founding father of the Radical Economic Transformation.

“I think there may be trust issues between Msholozi and the other candidates. You must keep in mind that Msholozi and Dlamini Zuma have a history and children together. So I think maybe Msholozi feel comfortable by having her as a presidential contender as opposed to the other contenders like Dr Mkhize and Mama Lindiwe Sisulu,” said Breakfast.

According to Dr Breakfast, Dlamini-Zuma does not pose a threat to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“I do not think that she poses a threat to President Cyril Ramaphosa. The only thing that will hold back Ramaphosa, in my opinion, is the Phala Phala saga. Otherwise, I think at a strategic level he has done the groundwork.” he said.

He said ANC deliberations spill over the entire country, whether we like it or not.
