Western Cape Proposes R 1 Billion Halaal Food Park

July 28, 2015

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2015-07-28

The Western Cape Government is considering developing a R 1-billion Halaal agri-processing food park near the Cape Town International Airport or Cape Winelands in the Western Cape.

The proposed park developed in conjunction with the Western Cape Fine Foods Initiative and the private sector, will be a cluster of manufacturing and service firms in the Halaal industry.

Alan Winde‚ provincial minister of Economic Opportunities, said the global Halaal market is worth $2.3 trillion and the proposed Halaal park will allow the Western Cape to double the share of that fast-growing market.

“We seek to increase the value of Halaal exports by $31 billion by 2020‚” Winde said in a statement.

A target market will be the Middle East and North Africa‚ home to an estimated 20% of the world’s Muslim population.

Winde also envisaged that the proposed park could add 5‚000 new jobs to the economy in the next five years.

The park‚ if approved‚ could be launched in the next two years.

Winde will submit the proposal to Cabinet next month.
