Water challenges continue in cities of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane

Residents of Gauteng are unhappy as the water crisis worsens and more regions struggle with no water at all.

Despite the numerous explanations offered for the current situation, Prof. Anthony Turton, a water specialist, claims that the problems with the water supply in some areas of Gauteng have less to do with a lack of water and more to do with the breakdown of the institutions of government.

Prof. Anthony Turton discusses the fundamental concerns behind the water crisis that the government attempts to hide with Radio Islam International.

This comes after Rand Water said on Friday that due to low water levels in reservoirs, it would be instituting water cuts ranging from an hour to up to 10 hours across numerous towns.

The Johannesburg water crisis worsened because of a system crash that left reservoirs dry.

The system, which has been unable to support South Africa’s expanding population, has been put under strain by the population growth in non-human habitation zones.

Turton says immigration over the past 20 years has affected dam levels, and the government must acknowledge this as a crisis before seeking answers.
