[WATCH] “Wits Has Always Been More Than a Job” – Adam Habib Bows Out as Vice-Chancellor

February 19, 2020

Wits University Vice-Chancellor Adam Habib has told Radio Islam it’s the right moment to leave Wits as the institution is financially stable, academically strong and has an incredible executive team.

After eight years, Habib announced his resignation on Monday, adding that he’s leaving Wits to take up a new post as Director at the London-based School of Oriental and African Studies in 2021.

Habib has seen some quite eventful periods during his term, most notably, the Fees Must Fall protests which were sparked back in 2015.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Habib says Wits has always been more than a job.

“It’s been a project, it’s been a passion, because in a sense I’ve always held if we are going to transform this this society and cerate the kinds of inclusive future we want. Our universities have to be at the centre of it and a lot of ways given where Wits is, given its history, given its location, its an important player in that future.”

Habib will vacate his roles at Wits at the end of December.
