The SA Weather Services have issued a level 4 weather warning for the south-eastern parts of KZN. Many parts of Durban were lashed by heavy rain, causing a morning of chaos on some Durban roads.

ALS Paramedic Garrith Jamieson said that parts of O’Flaherty Road and the M7 near the Bellville Road bridge were waterlogged. He warned drivers to be cautious in low-lying areas where water could pool as emergency first responders have been dealing with several serious incidents in and around Durban this morning.

The areas most affected included the N2 near the Umhlanga and Gateway area and the M7; there were about four accidents on the M7 between Pinetown and Malvern this morning. He added that the M19 going towards Pinetown also has small streams. He also cautioned drivers using roads near Field Hill to be careful going up and down the route.

Forecasters say disruptive rains are also expected along the coast up to Richards Bay and over the north-western areas. The heavy rainfall is expected to impact many municipalities, and Disaster management teams are on high alert at municipalities across KZN. The Department of Cooperative Governance calls on residents to be cautious of flooding and infrastructure damage.

The rains may cause flooding and damage mud houses, roads, low-lying bridges and rivers, while other areas may suffer infrastructural damage.

Meanwhile, the National Sea Rescue Institute urges bathers and beach goers to be cautious around coastal waters in the next few days.

NSRI Spokesperson Craig Lambinon says, since Friday, full moon spring tides have resulted in higher than normal high tides and lower than average low. Two high tides and two low tides daily are expected to occur later each day. Lambinon says the spring tides will gradually recede.
