Visiting the Ill – An Act of Great Reward

January 19, 2015
by Mufti Zubayr Bayat
It is an established Sunnah and part of good Islamic etiquette to visit a sick person. The purpose of visiting can be several:

1. To be reminded of one’s won good health and to increase in Shukr (gratitude) to Allah for this bounty.
2. To provide moral support to the ill person.
3. To pray various Duas mentioned in the Hadith for the sick person.
4. To assist in the sick person in whichever way possible.
5. To make sure that the sick person is taken care of.
6. To reap the many rewards of visiting the sick.

Sayyadina Ibn Abbas RA said: “The first visit to a sick person is Sunnah, while any subsequent visit is a voluntary act (a good deed).”

Sayyadina Abu Musa RA reported that Rasulullah SAW, said: “Feed the hungry, visit the sick, and free the captives.”

Rasulullah SAW also said: “A Muslim has six obligations to another Muslim.” “What are these?” they asked. He replied: “To greet another Muslim when you meet him; to respond when he invites you; to give him your (sincerest) advice when he seeks it; to say ‘Yarhamukallah’ (may Allah have mercy upon you) when he sneezes and says ‘Alhamdulillah’ (may Allah be praised); to visit him when he falls ill; and when he dies, to attend his funeral.”
