A video has emerged showing a grieving man being aggressively dragged away from the hospital bedside of his dying six-year-old daughter by police. The disturbing incident took place during August 2019, in a hospital in the North of England that cannot be named for legal reasons.
The disturbing footage from a United Kingdom officer’s body-cam shows how Rashid Abbasi, a 59-year-old hospital consultant who has worked in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) for more than 30 years, was pulled away from his critically ill six-year-old daughter by an officer holding his neck. He is seen holding the hand of his daughter, Zainab, as the police made their way into the intensive care room.
A few minutes before the Police arrival, Rashid and his wife were informed that their daughter’s life support was going to be withdrawn. Zainab was suffering from respiratory problems and a rare genetic illness called Niemann-Pick syndrome.
The parents were involved in a disagreement with the doctors as the medics insisted Zainab should be allowed to die and the couple insisted they wanted the hospital to try a treatment they believed would help
Officers asked for Mr Abbasi to leave his daughter’s bedside and talk to them outside the ward but he refused. Abbasi’s wife, Aliya, suggested the officers talk to her husband at the bedside. She asked them to show compassion as they were just informed that their daughter was going to die. Despite this, an officer gave Mr Abbasi a final warning before dragging him away from his daughter.
Abbasi who suffers from serious heart problems was then forced to the floor as he complained of a chest pain. He was later told he had suffered a heart attack and had surgery done the following day.
The footage has been released as part of a legal case brought by the parents against Northumbria police. The incident shines a light on how the NHS handles sensitive cases when parents disagree with medics’ decisions to withdraw their child’s life support.
Sadly, Six-year-old Zainab died in September last year.
