Vaal Dam Levels on the Rise but SA not out of the Woods Yet

January 10, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 10-01-2017

Despite the good rains experienced across the country and with the Vaal Dam levels increasing to 49.6% the Department of Water and Sanitation has urged residents to continue saving water.

For the last 10 consecutive weeks, the department has reported rising Vaal Dam levels.

Spokesperson Sputnik Ratau says even if the Vaal Dam reaches a 100%, residents need to save water because South Africa is a water scarce country.

Ratau says there are number of factors which affect water availability including the impact of climate change, pollution and wastage.

“We would rather see South Africans having a culture of water saving because ordinarily we need to be a water conscious people rather than just going on as if water is something that we will always have.”

Ratau says there are still many towns that have no water and also dams where the water level is below 10% or completely dry and is hoping the Weather Service’s above average rainfall prediction for February and April makes a significant impact on the current drought affecting the country.
