A Historian of Islam in China says an estimated five to ten percent of the Uyghur population find themselves imprisoned in internment centres.
Rian Thum told Radio Islam that the Uyghurs are subjected to forced indoctrination.
“While people who are still outside of these internment centres are subject to a whole host of rules that make it nearly impossible for them to practice their religion and many of their cultural traditions.”
Thum says a significant part of the Uyghur community remains dissatisfied with the rule of Chinese state.
