October 25, 2018

Mohamed Ameen Dabhelia – 2018/10/25

A Historian of Islam in China says an estimated five to ten percent of the Uyghur population find themselves imprisoned in internment centres.

Rian Thum told Radio Islam that the Uyghurs are subjected to forced indoctrination.

“While people who are still outside of these internment centres are subject to a whole host of rules that make it nearly impossible for them to practice their religion and many of their cultural traditions.”

Thum says a significant part of the Uyghur community remains dissatisfied with the rule of Chinese state.

“It seems that under Xi Jinping, the Chinese government has decided it’s willing to go almost any lengths to quench that dissent.”

According to an opinion piece written by Thum, he states that – “over the last decade, the Xinjiang authorities have accelerated policies to reshape Uighurs’ habits — even, the state says, their thoughts.”
