The United Ulama Council of South Africa says the suspects arrested and linked to an attack on a mosque in Verulam and possibly to bomb threats at shops and malls in KwaZulu-Natal must face the full might of the law.
Nineteen suspects appeared in court on Monday over the attack on the Imam Hussain Mosque in May that left one person dead and three others critically wounded during the month of Ramadan.
Several devices were also placed in mall shops in Durban between March and August.
UUCSA’s Ml Yusuf Patel says the efforts of authorities to investigate, arrest and subsequent appearance of the suspects in court provides a sense of relief after month of uncertainty and apprehension.
“Any criminal act that undermines the security and safety of the populace of South Africa needs to be condemned without any murmur of reservation. If these people are guilty, then they have to face the full might of the law.”
Ml Patel says it’s imperative to allow the investigations to continue before making any assumptions about the suspect’s culpability.
