The United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) has advised the Muslim community to invoke the mercy of Allah as the country battles the third wave of the Coronavirus pandemic.

On Saturday a special National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) meeting convened to receive a report from the scientists on the prevalence of the Delta variant in South Africa that caused, initially, a massive epidemic in India.

In a statement, UUCSA says the steep spike in infections has huge implications for the country’s health system which is already severely strained and struggling to cope.

“It is our responsibility to take measures that will help in mitigating the risks of COVID-19 infection.

On Saturday the health ministry announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation on Sunday on the country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic
