The United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) says Ulama bodies under its umbrella have agreed to differ on the moon sighting for the Islamic month of Rabi’ul Awwal.
Confusion reigned yesterday after reports on social media indicated the moon was reportedly sighted in Cape Town and Kimberly.
After much deliberation, UUCSA has concluded that the moon was sighted in Groblershoop, Northern Cape and by one individual in Kimberley, therefore Thursday the 1st of December 2016 corresponds to the 1st of Rab’ul Awwal 1438.
Spokesperson Moulana Ebrahim Bham says while a number of member bodies have accepted the sighting of the crescent, the Sunni Jamiatul Ulama and Sunni Council have rejected it.
“For the bodies that have not accepted the sighting of the crescent of Wednesday, the 30th of November 2016, today is the 30th of Safar for those bodies their determination is that the 1st of Rabi’ul Awwal shall be on Friday the 2nd of December”
Moulana Bham says UUCSA has expressed its apologies for the delay in reaching a consensus on the moon sighting while at the same time he has appealed to all Muslims in South Africa to respect the various Ulama bodies decision within the umbrella organisation on the moon sighting decision that has been adopted.
He says the UUCSA will continue working with unity towards protection and development of Islam.
