US Dem Lawmaker: Supreme Court ‘Endorsed Discrimination’ with Trump Muslim Travel Ban Ruling

June 26, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 26-06-2018

A US Dem lawmaker says the decision by the Supreme Court to uphold President Donald Trump’s controversial order blocking entry by people from several Muslim-majority countries endorses discrimination.

The Hill reports that in a 5-4 decision on Tuesday, the Supreme Court stated in its majority opinion, written by Chief Justice John Roberts and his four conservative colleagues that Trump’s action was “squarely within the scope of presidential authority” under US immigration law.

The travel ban or Muslim ban announced in September which has been widely criticised by human rights and refugee advocacy groups, prohibits entry into the US by most people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen.

It also affects two non-Muslim countries blocking travellers from North Korea and some Venezuelan government officials and their families.

In a tweet, Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.) says history will look back on today’s #SCOTUS decision as one where the court endorsed discrimination.

Critics have argued that the ban discriminates against immigrants based on their religious background, citing the Muslim majorities making up the populations of the targeted countries and Trump’s previous statements about Islam.

The court’s ruling is a major win for Trump with several versions being repeatedly being challenged in court.
