The US Treasury has designated and sanctioned four individuals as members of an ISIS cell in Durban, while also designating eight companies controlled or directed by the individuals in the cell. The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control yesterday stated that the cell has been operating within South African borders and provided technical, financial, or material support to ISIS.
Radio Islam International asked an associate editor at Daily Maverick and former American diplomat, Brooks Spector if there was a link between the sanction of these individuals and the terror alert that was issued about two weeks ago about a possible attack on Sandton.
“I don’t know if the two incidents are related. I tend to think they are not as they are different kinds of circumstances. They show a large trend here that could impinge on the safety and security of South African citizens and foreign nationals”, said Brooks
