Upgraded N12 Freeway Officially Opened

March 03, 2016

Mohamed Ameen Dabhelia, 2016-03-03

The Gauteng department of roads and transport says the upgrading of the N12 highway is one of the biggest projects the department had undertaken.

MEC Ismail Vadi today officially opened the upgraded N12 freeway near Zuurbekom South of Johannesburg.

The project cost an estimated R485 million and took 20 months to complete.

Vadi says The N12 freeway serves as a critical freight link between Gauteng and the North West Province, including the Western Cape, and services the mining, agriculture and tourism sectors.

“We’ve upgraded the N12 all the way from Eldorado Park, passing Lenasia, Zuurbekom right through to the North West boundary.”

He says freeways usually last for twenty five years before they are rehabilitated, which meant the N12 which is about 35 to 40 years old already needed an urgent upgrade and rehabilitation.

The department is currently working on the N14 route between Pretoria and Krugersdorp.
