Ugandan Minister Survives Gun Attack, Daughter Killed

June 01, 2021

Assailants in Uganda on Tuesday morning opened fire at a vehicle, killing General Katumba Wamala’s daughter and his driver. Currently Uganda’s Minister of Transport, Wamala had served as Uganda’s former army commander.

The attack took place in a suburb of the capital, Kampala. According to Uganda’s military two gunmen riding on motorcycles staged the attack. Social media images showed bullet holes in the window of a car next to which Wamala stood, in bloody clothes.

Africa New reports that Wamala sustained injuries in both his shoulders. Speaking from his hospital bed, he said, “I have survived. God has given me a second chance.”

There have been several unsolved murders targeting prominent figures in Uganda in recent years, including Muslim clerics, resulting in President Yoweri Museveni having ordered surveillance cameras to be installed in Kampala, as well as in all major towns across the country.
