Uganda Police Charge Nanny With Attempted Murder After Brutally Assaulting Toddler

November 24, 2014

An abusive nanny in Uganda has been charged with attempted murder after video footage of her brutally assaulting the toddler went viral.

The startling discovery was made after the child’s father Erick Kamanzi checked security cameras upon discovering bruises on his baby daughter Arnella Kamanzi’s body.

Baby Arnella Kamanzi was at home with her nanny, 22-year-old Jolly Tumuhirwe when after vomiting, the helper unleashed a series of brutal attacks on her.

Tumuhirwe was caught on camera, savagely slapping the child, viciously throwing her to the floor and using a blunt object to forcefully beat her while she continuously stepped on the toddler’s tiny body.

Social media users saluted Erick Kamanzi, who after seeing the video reportedly beat the nanny so brutally that she was left confined to a wheelchair.

Managing editor of Nehanda Radio Lance Guma told Radio Islam that Erick Kamanzi was arrested after Tumuhirwe laid charges against him, but that police quickly changed their stance and released Kamanzi after he referred them to the video footage.

“We must not generalize on all maids & helpers, there are many hardworking domestic helpers out there,” said Guma.

Despite the cruel beating inflicted upon her, little Arnella is recovering at home in the company of her parents, Angela Mbabazi and Erick Kamanzi.

Tumuhirwe was charged with torture at the Nakawa magistrate’s court where she was remanded to the Luzira Prison until December 8, when she will reappear before the same court on the amended charge of attempted murder

South Africans this week commemorate the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children, an international campaign observed from 25 November to the 10 December that would hopefully put an end to behaviours such as the one seen in the video.
