Newly elected president of the United State Donald Trump has vowed to place the battle against Islamic extremism at the heart of his foreign policy.
Trump has been sworn in as the 45th President of the United States in Washington this evening.
Trump used his moment in the national spotlight to pledge an end to “radical Islamic terrorism” a phrase President Barack Obama declined to say during his eight-year tenure.
“We will reinforce all alliances & form news ones & unite the civilized world against radical Islamic terrorism which we will eradicate completely from the face of the earth.”
Obama had warned Trump and other Republicans from using the phrase, saying it would help terrorists create the impression that the United States was waging a religious war against Islam.
“There’s no magic to the phrase,” Obama said in June, accusing Trump of “loose talk” about Muslims. “It’s a political talking point; it’s not a strategy.”
