October 25, 2016

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 25-10-2016

Metrorail says a preliminary investigation into the fatal train crash in Tembisa has revealed one of the train drivers skipped a red signal which caused the accident.

Two trains collided yesterday on the rail split from Kaalfontein Station towards Oakmoore and Tembisa stations in Esselen Park which left one person dead and over 240 others injured.

Metrorails Lilian says one driver was responsible for the crash

“One driver passed a red signal and this led to the two trains colliding on the same track. We are going to make sure that a board of inquiry is set up to between Railway Safety Regulator and Metrorail to make sure that we get the details of what could have caused the accident.”

Mofokeng says Metrorail’s focus was now on the family of the person killed and those injured.

“We are giving support to the family of the deceased and would like to pass our condolences to them. To those who are injured, we would like to wish them a speedy recovery.”

Meanwhile the police’s Kay Makhubela says they have opened a case of culpable homicide.

“We are going to investigate two cases – culpable homicide and collision of the two trains. We will be taking statements and presenting them to the prosecutor. Whichever driver was found to be at fault would be charged.”
