Toyota South Africa has confirmed there has been significant damage to its plant in in Prospecton, KwaZulu-Natal after the province was lashed by a massive storm.
Heavy rains and strong winds have wreaked havoc in parts of the province, leaving at least two people dead, five hospitals partly destroyed and schools on shut down.
CEO of Toyota South Motors Andrew Kirby says buildings at the plant including equipment and motor vehicles on the line were damaged by the storm.
“Our first priority was to ensure the safety of our employees and I’m pleased to report that there were no injuries resulting from this morning’s downpour.
Kirby says the factory has been temporarily shut down.
“Production for now has been halted at the facility for the rest of today and tomorrow to enable us to quantify the extent of the damage – we’ll then reassess the situation again on Thursday and decide if we can resume normal manufacturing.”
Emergency teams remain on standby throughout all affected areas.
