A tornado on the East Rand near OR Tambo International Airport has caused extensive damage in Tembsia ripping off the roof at the Phumulani Mall and damaging several cars.

It’s believed the twister which was spotted by several people hit the area this afternoon.

Phumulani Mall’s Godfrey Mashakgomo has confirmed that several people have been injured.

Ekurhuleni emergency service Wilfrid Kgasago says emergency services are trying to assist injured shoppers.

“In Phumulani Mall the roof was ripped off and we have quite a number of people who have been injured, hence we have summoned a number of officers to come and beef up our numbers so that we can do our search and rescue there.”

Kgasago says the tornado has left trail of destruction in its wake

“The reports that we’ve got is that whirlwind or tornado went pass Tembisa and other reports that we get is that it’s now going towards Bronkhorstspruit.”

This is the second tornado to hit the province in 24 hours with the first one in Magaliesburg yesterday.
