The South African Weather Service has confirmed to Radio Islam that a tornado has hit the Mpolweni area near New Hanover in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
The Weather Service issued a warning of severe thunderstorms in KZN earlier today saying further rainfall could result in damaging impacts for some areas.
Forecaster Jan Vermeulen says the heavy rain is expected to lead to flooding of roads and settlements both formal and informal, which may result in some communities being displaced and inaccessible.
“This afternoon there was a tornado reported at New Hanover between Pietermaritzburg and Cape Town and we have video footage of it and also there has been reports of some damage to a substation and there are power outages in the area.”
Vermuelen says there is a further watch for severe thunderstorms in the Midlands and the eastern parts of KZN as well as the south western parts of the Free State and north eastern parts of the Eastern Cape.
