Thousands of Pakistanis protest against UAE-Israel peace deal

August 18, 2020

Husain Mohamed – 18/08/2020

The normalization deal signed between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Israel has caused upset among Pakistani authorities and civilians. Thousands of Pakistanis came together on Sunday to protest against the deal.

Mass demonstrations were held all across Pakistan, including the capital, Islamabad, the port city of Karachi, north-eastern city of Lahore, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Quetta, Faisalabad, Multan and Hyderabad.

The Milli Yakjehti Council, a political-religious alliance, organized the protests and they called on all Pakistani people to join their protests and condemn the controversial deal between Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv. The group labelled the day as one of solidarity and support for the Palestinian resistance against “the Zionist occupation”.

Last week, US President Donald Trump announced a peace deal between the UAE and Israel brokered by Washington. The agreement will fully normalize the relationship between the two countries in terms of security, tourism, technology and trade. In return, the move will forestall Israel’s controversial plans to annex large swathes of the occupied West Bank.

However Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says that the annexation is not off the table, but has simply been postponed.
