Third Bodyguard in President Erdogan’s Protection Unit to Commit Suicide

March 18, 2021

A security officer working in Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s protection unit has committed suicide. Al Arabiya reports that Mehmet Ali Bulut had left a note saying he had had to bear insults as well as threats emanating from work.

Bulut’s colleagues discovered his body at his apartment after he had failed to show up at work. His phone had been turned off as well. The bodyguard’s death was ruled a suicide after his colleagues found the note.

Bulut’s suicide note reportedly read, “I wish you had treated your employees well and asked them how they are. It must be what you do best to insult your personnel, threaten them, fire them, humiliate them and make them out to be liars.” He wrote, “Every man has his pride, and I couldn’t stomach those words.”

According to Al Arabiya, Bulut was the third officer to commit suicide this year. Earlier this year, two other officers, Halil Akkaya and Ethem Dağdeviren, had also reportedly taken their own lives.
