March 12, 2015

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2015-03-12

The situation in Thembelihle informal settlement in Lenasia remains tense after MEC for Human Settlements Jacob Mamabolo once again failed to visit the area to address residents.

A member of the mayoral committee for environment, infrastructure and services in Gauteng, Tshidi Mfikoe sent by Jacob Mambololo to deal with problems in the  informal settlement visited the area yesterday but received a hostile reception from the community

Residents are demanding to see MEC Mamabolo and no other delegation.

Police used teargas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds who tried to attack members of the mayoral committee.

“We are still going to demonstrate until Jacob Mamabolo himself comes to present a memorandum of understanding to the community,” spokesperson for Thembelihle Residents Association  Nhlankanipho Lukele said.

Thembelihle residents have been protesting over a lack of housing, electricity and sanitation calling on Mamabolo to intervene.

Police continue monitor the area as residents refuse to back down.
