A 33-year-old resident shot during protest action at the Thembelihle informal settlement south of Johannesburg has died in hospital overnight.

The man was allegedly shot by a Lenasia resident who opened fire on protesters who had blocked parts of the K43 road near the Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital and tried to torch electrical boxes in the area on Wednesday night.

Earlier on Thursday a small group of protesters also tried to petrol bomb the house of the man in retaliation to the shooting on protestors.

The 47-year-old man is set to appear in court on charges of murder

34 people have been arrested so far since Monday for public violence.

The police’s Kay Makhubela said the people arrested refused to stop throwing stones at passing cars on the main road.
