The Strength Of South Africa’s Democracy Unpacked With ASRI’s Angelo Fick

On the 27th of April, South Africans will celebrate a quarter of a century of democracy.

Voters from all races made their crosses for the first time in a democratic country, in 1994.

However, this hard fought democracy came with its own challenges.

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Democracy Index for 2018, put South Africa 40th out of the 167 territories covered by the index.

This points to a relatively strong democratic culture, though the country is categorised as a flawed democracy.
