A newborn was among the ten people killed in a horrific bus crash on the N3 highway on Tuesday afternoon, according to emergency workers.

Colonel Thembeka Mbele, a KZN police spokeswoman, stated that on Tuesday bus carrying passengers was travelling northbound when it swerved off the southbound on Tugela Bridge and overturned.

Near the Bergville off-ramp, the driver lost control of the vehicle. It veered off the highway and landed on the side of the road in the veld.

The victims were declared dead at the scene, according to KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie.

The bus left Durban Station yesterday, on its way to Johannesburg, according to a statement from the transport department. According to the information available, the vehicle’s front right tyre blew out.

Multiple victims were treated on the site by paramedics from KZN Medical Emergency Services and private ambulance services, according to McKenzie.

“A total of 60 persons were treated on the scene and sent to a hospital for additional treatment.”

McKenzie says that all 60 patients sustained injuries that range from critical to minor.

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula on Tuesday said he was shocked and saddened by the crash.

Eldo Coaches said the accident has left them “deeply saddened,” and that its top goal now is to assist the passengers. According to the corporation, it is also fully engaging with the police inquiry.

A case of culpable homicide is being investigated by police.
