India’s Supreme Court ruling to hand over ownership of a disputed religious site in the northern town of Ayodhya to Hindus has reignited tensions between Muslims and Hindus.
The judgement greenlighted the construction of a Hindu temple on a site where the Babri Masjid had been built.
The Babri Masjid was destroyed in 1992 by sledgehammer wielding Hindu devotees.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi refers to the judgment as a victory and as the first step towards wiping away centuries of oppression by the Muslim Mughal including British colonists.
The ruling in favour of the Hindu temple is also seen as a conquest and step closer to establishing a Hindu state.
Many Muslim’s in the area fear the ruling will downcast them to second-class citizens leading to more attacks.
The court also ruled that Muslims would be granted five acres of land to build a masjid at a site in Ayodhya.
