Head of Programmes at Media Monitoring Africa, Thandi Smith, speaks to Radio Islam International on this week’s Africa Report.

Two issues linked to the Queen’s death. The one is about the relevance and the future of the Commonwealth. Thandi said questions are now being asked about the relevance surrounding the monarchy and the leader of the Commonwealth.

The second part is questioning how the monarchy dealt with the history of colonialism. According to Thandi, many young people say the one thing missed was the Queen apologising for colonialism before her death.

Meanwhile, issues of power production, the future of power generation, and what African countries are doing amid ongoing power cuts.

According to Thandi, the complete frustration and anxiety experienced with load shedding in South Africa raise questions surrounding energy production in the African continent.

She stated that almost 40 per cent of people on the African continent don’t have access to energy sources.

“A significant number of people that don’t have access to power and our load shedding situation has highlighted this issue. On an African comment, we have the renewable energy resources including the means and the natural tool resources for solar power.”

This leaves us with the answered questions of what is being done. And do we have a typical African approach to finding a solution for this challenge on the African continent?
