The MD of World Wide Worx says Liberty hasn’t been very transparent after the company fell victim to cyber attack.
The financial services group had admitted to a data breach on Saturday night and that hackers stole emails, related attachments and data belonging to clients and are demanding payment.
Liberty has assembled a team of security experts to investigate the hack.
World Wide Worx’s Arthur Goldstuck says there’s very little information about what actually happened to Liberty.
“We still don’t know what the nature of breach was and we don’t know how bad it was, we don’t know how they got in, what they got into and what they got away with. Liberty have indicated that it’s only e-mails and attachments. But that could also mean every single email they’ve sent and received and attachments of course would be policy documents. That is quite disastrous.”
Goldstuck has warned people that criminals are always a step ahead and that they should adopt best practices when it comes to online security.
“You should never have the same password for different financial services sites or even for different sites. Because when a site is breached and passwords and usernames are accessed and those same passwords and usernames are tried out on other sites because very often people use the same credentials.”
Goldstuck says while the financial losses for Liberty may currently be non-existent, but future potential losses could be massive.
