Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has ordered the management of a private school in Turffontein in Joburg to apologise to parents of girls who were allegedly sexually harassed.
Teachers at Jordao College are alleged to have forced grade 10 to 12 female pupils to pull down their underwear to be checked for sexual activity.
This after a used condom was apparently found in a school bathroom.
The school’s principal told parents in a newsletter there was no physical contact between teachers and the girls.
The matter has now been reported to the Human Rights Commission and comes as the country marks Child Protection Week.
The MEC visited the school yesterday and his spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said they’re very concerned.
“This is something now that is in the hands of the Human Rights Commission. So the MEC informed the school management that the same information that was provided to him must be provided to the commission.”
“We will then act upon the receipt of Human Rights Commissions report,” said Sekhonyane.
A team of councillors have been made available to the affected girls.
