Six suspects arrested for the attempted hijacking and death of Riad Malek appeared in the Protea Magistrates court yesterday (13 November).
Four of the suspects have been released due to a lack of evidence while the two other suspects have been charged with murder, attempted murder, attempted hijacking and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
Radio Islam has also learnt that one of the two suspects has a prior conviction for robbery and served 6 months in jail with 3 years suspended.
According to a source, one of the suspects allegedly confessed to having possession of the murder weapon and also allegedly firing three shots, one of which fatally wounded and killed Malek.
The father of four was shot and killed on Sunday night (10 November) when he was accosted by six armed men who tried to hijack his vehicle.
Malek, his wife Fatima and nephew Sa'ad Badat were on their way to drop off his son Moulana Yazeed at the Hudson Street Masjid in Lenasia Extension 10 South of Johannesburg at 11pm when the incident occurred.
“Alhamdulillah we were at the court today where the two persons were positively identified by Moulana Yazeed…” said Moulana Moosa Badat, the father of Sa'ad.
“(They) were charged formally for murder, attempted murder, attempted hijacking, and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition,” added Moulana Badat.
Moulana Badat said the suspects are bringing forth a bail application on Monday (18 November) which they will vehemently oppose.
“Alhamdulillah the MRU (Muslim Response Unit) were very instrumental in assisting us, as well as the SAP’s detective Tshabalala and detective Dangor from Lenz,” said Moulana Badat.
The case has been postponed to the 18th November
